Parkview Business Connect
COVID-19 Resources for Businesses

Reopening the Workplace

As businesses and organizations in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio prepare to reopen while COVID-19 remains in our community, we face many challenges. As we all navigate a new normal, Parkview wants to be a resource for our community, partnering with you to provide information on best practice. We’ll also share our own insights and lessons learned while maintaining operations since the start of the pandemic.

Parkview’s plans call for a phased approach that will be dependent on numerous factors. It will require ongoing monitoring and we expect changes and new learning along the way. Our focus is creating a sustained approach – a marathon rather than a sprint – with a focus on co-worker, patient and community safety.

Parkview’s decisions to reintroduce and continue specific services are based on many factors, including number of patients hospitalized, level of care needed for our patients, staffing availability, supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) and more.

Masking
The use of masks can be an important tactic in reducing the spread of COVID-19. However, we caution that masks are only one part of the equation. Internally, Parkview uses the phrase “More than a Mask” in its communication, emphasizing that the novel coronavirus is often spread by touching surfaces and then touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Proper handwashing and avoiding touching your face remain very important. Learn more about mask use.

Testing
We recognize there is a great deal of conflicting information about testing. Testing materials and options remain limited and the current cost to test all employees is likely prohibitive. Parkview continues to follow guidelines set by state health departments to determine the most appropriate patients to collect samples for testing. As supply availability improves and cost goes down, broader testing may become an option for more employers.

Should you consider reopening?

Opening Safely

Opening should be designed with these elements in mind, thinking in terms of both reducing the spread of the virus among employees and customers while maintaining business operations.

When government permissions are granted to reopen, consider:

  • People
  • Place
  • Economy

Questions businesses should consider prior to restarting include:

  1. Have you put COVID-19 health and safety mitigations into effect for the health and safety of your employees throughout the workday, including, as necessary, transport to and from your facility?
  2. Do you have a reasonable, ongoing demand for your product/service?
  3. Do you have ample quantities of materials, products and other supplies to support your operations at a reasonable level?
  4. Have executive orders which have prevented your operation to continue during the COVID-19 crisis been lifted, or have you been provided with a waiver as an essential business?

Developing Your Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response Plan

  1. Identify the level(s) of risk associated with your business
  2. Address the level(s) of risk associated with your business
  3. Develop a phased approach to resuming business
  4. Communicate phased approach to resuming business
  5. Implement a phased approach to resuming business

Identify level od risk

Identify Level of Risk

The level of risk depends in part on the industry type, need for contact within 6 feet of people known to be, or suspected of being, infected with COVID-19, or requirement for repeated or extended contact with others in general. With community spread, it’s difficult to know who has been exposed to the virus and who could be a carrier.

safe environment

As you design strategies to safely open, consider:

  • Flexibility – anticipate that the situation will be fluid
  • Sustainability – expect that the situation will be long-term
  • Collaboration – seek information from internal and external subject matter experts
  • Simplicity – don’t overlook small changes that can make an impact
